Flint Hills Queer Affirming Therapists

Our Methodology: This list was compiled by having local mental health counselors self-identify as: queer affirming, queer competent, queer specializing, or queer identified. Our goal with this list is to pre-screen folks so people can assess who might best meet their needs. One of the primary ways people search for therapists is through Psychology Today. However, Psychology Today's system only allows for quick identification of populations served (lesbian, gay, etc.) which allows for conversion therapists to be listed as LGBT serving. That is dangerous! So, we have compiled the below list of providers with descriptors that folks can use to help find mental health support based on the various levels of queer expertise one might be looking for. Below we define what we mean by each phrase and list providers with how they identify and a little bit about their practice and contact information.

We invite any providers interested in being added to the list or having their entry updated to email us at fhhrp@yahoo.com

Additionally, we are interested in building and expanding local competencies in LGBTQ affirming healthcare and thus encourage local providers to pursue World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) certification here: https://www.wpath.org/about-gei as well as QTBIPOC specific education to better serve our community.

Glossary of Terms:

Queer Affirming

Refers to folks that are willing to support LGBTQ folks and have a range of specialties. Here are providers that clients don't have to educate. These might not be specialists in things like Trans Eating Disorder Recovery but they can provide quality care as LGBTQ folks don’t always need to talk about gender or sexuality but shouldn't be gaslighted by counselors around gender and sexuality or the ways gender and sexuality intersect with race, class, nation, or coloniality for so many of us.

Queer Competent

Refers to folks able to do work on concerns unique to the LGBTQ community while understanding why those concerns are unique. Here are counselors that feel they can do proper psycho education and interventions that we don't have to educate about the complex contours of queer life.

Queer Specializing

Refers to folks whose work focuses on issues specific to a particular queer identity/identities. These are the counselors that feel they are the local experts in queer mental health.

Queer Identified

Folks who themselves identify as queer, lesbian, bi, gay, trans, intersex, non-binary, asexual, pan, etc.

Orgs and Programs

We also list professional organization affiliations like GALAP (the Gender Affirming Letter Access Project) or EMDRIA (the professional association for EMDR practitioners and researchers), as well as funding programs that providers are part of that allow clients access to therapy at a reduced cost.
